Dreams and hard work are a powerful combinaton. Add to the mix creativity and international solidarity. While these are components of all of our business projects, New Dawn Poultry Farm illustrates how these components also lead to growth and expansion.

In the fall of 2004, Salvadoran Enterprises for Women (SEW) provided a grant so New Dawn could purchase an incubator. A variety of hens were raised by the women outside their homes and they wanted to expand their production with incubation. That worked well, providing a modest income and improving nutrition for their families and the community.

Cocobano town leadership recognized the skills and organization of these women as well as the contribution they were making to the larger community. Thus, three years later, New Dawn women worked with their community leadership to find appropriate land. With a grant from Salvadoran Enterprises for Women, the women purchased the land, hired a builder and purchased needed materials for housing for the poultry farm. Now with 330 laying hens, New Dawn markets eggs to individuals and two restaurants regionally. Eggs are provided at cost to the community.
